Mitsubishi-Hitachi Metals Machinery Inc. will supply the mechanical portion of the mill. Toshiba GE Automation Systems Corporation are to supply and commission 3 off 6,3MW motors and associated IEGT Drive Systems and automation as part of the overall contract. Employing Toshiba – developed IEGT (Injection Enhanced Gate Transistor) power transistors as the heart of the Drive Systems, a significant breakthrough in AC Drives technology has been achieved. These devices require significantly smaller firing energy compared with existing power semiconductors and this in turn reduces the component count and improves overall equipment reliability. Many technical advantages have arisen from the use of these devices, including higher power conversion efficiencies and superior operating characteristics in terms of harmonic generation and power factor performance. Winder Control working together with ToshibaGE drive & control systems in Southern Africa will be intimately involved in the project from the outset. Winder Controls will offer support in terms of local supplies and procurement; construction engineering practices including adherence to local regulations and engineering codes. Additionally, Winder Controls engineers will be responsible for local technical support after the plant has been commissioned. Winder Controls has additionally been contracted to locally design and manufacture two emergency braking systems for the mill drives.
